K9 Handler Basic School

The canine basic training program is an 8 week* class that is offered through Edgecombe Community College in Tarboro NC. This course is designed to train the handler and the canine together. We have set our own certification requirements that exceed standards set by other certifying organizations. Upon completion of the K9 Handler Basic School each K9 team will hold a certification that is good for one year from the date received.

Our K9 handler school offers training for the following types of K9 skill sets:

  • Dual Purpose Patrol

    A canine trained for Odor Detection, Tracking, Article Search, & Criminal Apprehension.

  • Single Purpose Patrol

    A canine trained for Odor Detection, Tracking, & Article Search.

  • Single Purpose Detection Dog

    A canine trained to detect Narcotic, Explosive, Electronic Device, or Cadaver odors.

  • Tracking Specific Dog

    A Bloodhound or other canine breed that is trained in scent discrimination tracking.

  • Law Enforcement Therapy Dog

    A canine trained specifically for therapy work. See information below.

This course is fee exempt for law enforcement.

*This course can be extended up to 12 weeks to accommodate the specific needs of any agency.

K9 Supervisor Course

Topics covered in this course include:

  • Developing and maintaining a training records system

  • Policy development and revision

  • Grant opportunities and application procedure

  • Management of legal issues

  • In-service training development

  • K9 Case law

  • Liability mitigation

The canine unit supervisors course is a two week course that takes place during the first two weeks of the K9 handler basic course. This course is designed to prepare supervisors to manage and maintain law enforcement canine unit programs.

This course can be exceptionally helpful for those little to no K9 experience who have been tasked with management of a K9 program, as it provides an inside look into the training that goes into preparing a police K9 and handler for duty. This opportunity enables the K9 supervisor know what is expected of the K9 handler for continued future training.

Law Enforcement Therapy Dog

The Law Enforcement Therapy Dog Course takes place during the K9 handler basic course. We take the time to carefully select canines with the best qualities for this line of work. This course is designed to train both the canine and the handler for various forms of community relations, victim engagement, and mental crisis situations.
